Crooked River Grasslands Harvest Ride

Ride Classification Leader  GPS My Ride
  D/29/Freq  Ben Groeneveld       Link

A 29 mile mixed surface ride incorporating some sites of the Crooked River Grasslands that have made it onto the National Register of Historic Places. We will be riding at a B pace off road and a D pace on pavement.

The ride starts and ends with low grades on the old Highway 97 which now functions as driveway for local residents. I like to ride this route clockwise. Numerous abandoned homesteads are given away by the poplar windbreaks still standing. Settlements started in the late 1800s were bought back by the government during the depression and turned into the present day grassland.

The route passes three surviving orchards. Two are historic sites. The McCoin orchard has more than 100 fruit trees in two stands. The Cyrus orchard has more than 160 trees in three stands. Varietals include Yellow Transparent, Esiline, Astrakhan, and Purple Siberian Crab.

  • 29 miles.
  • 12.7 paved.
  • 16.3 gravel, cinder, and unimproved.
  • Some short rutted sections.
  • Some short sections of #4 gravel.
  • Two short 7% grades.
  • Lots of cattle guards.
