Looking for adventure? Then join me for a tour around the Strawberry Mountain Wilderness in the Malheur National Forest.

You’ll need a bicycle that can carry enough gear to make it through one night at elevation (5,000-6,000 feet).

We’ll leave Bend in the morning, hitting John Day for lunch and then pedal along noisy (but decent shoulders) Highway 26 to Prairie City where we’ll break off to begin our travel along quiet country roads, all of which are paved. The trail heads uphill through spectacular forest, topping out in alpine country with views of the Strawberry Mountains. The tour then travels along rolling roads before dropping us off at Big Creek Campground where we will set up camp and enjoy the goodies we brought for dinner.

In the morning after breakfast we’ll head back onto our quiet roads (did I mention they are paved, and how few the cars are?) and then begin an exhilarating descent to US 395. Yes, we’ll be back to a highway, but it’s a quiet one. We’ll pedal to funky Canyon City and then back to our cars in John Day.

It’s a 3 day weekend, so let me know if starting Sunday would work better for you. Contact me, 503-799-0876,  to carpool. I’m super flexible about this tour; just want to do it!
