Cascade Cycling Classic Festival D/E-Ride

D-E/54/Occ David Garcia     Link

Saturday June 1 is the Cascade Cycling Classic's big "Sul Fuime" Crit Festival at the Parks and Rec Pavilion Ice Arena site. There will be pro and amateur criterium races, a high school grand prix (think 'Breaking Away' Little 500), kids' Strider races, a beer garden, live music, food trucks, a cycling expo area, and much, much more. The CCC events start at 1:00 and last into the evening. For more info on the CCC and Festival activities, visit cascade-classic.org.

But, as an added treat... Before the CCC's events get started, the COWs are hosting three community rides, all starting and finishing at the Sul Fuime Festival site. Come join the fun and show our non-COWs guests what Central Oregon cycling hospitality looks like.

This D/E-Ride version cuts a circuit across farmlands between Bend and Redmond, then winds back to a late-ride challenge up Archie Briggs Road and Awbrey Butte, tracing much of the route of the final CCC stage. From the festival site, we'll head out through neighborhoods to find Johnson Road and the way out of town. Passing rural farms and homesteads, we'll cruise through Tumalo, then head north towards Redmond, coming up just short of town before pointing back south to find several challenging climbs and a fast-paced decent down Awbrey Butte, back to the Festival site. The circuit extends to about 54 miles and we'll shoot to average between 14 and 18 mph. Hopefully, we'll divide into two or more sub-groups, with separate leaders setting different paces.

Note: If you prefer a slower pace and shorter distances, check out the B- and C-paced options, also accessible via the Calendar.

We encourage you to ride your bike to the festival site; there will be a bike corral area to stow your extra gear before the ride and your bike afterwards. If you need to drive, park in the big lot on Simpson, next to the Ice Arena. We'll gather at the crit start/finish line structure on Shevlin Hixon Drive. Be "ready to ride" at the gathering spot for pre-ride check-in at 9:15; we'll leave promptly at 9:30.

Guests can sign up here or through the CCC website. All non-COWs members will need to sign a waiver. All riders must wear a helmet and be self-supporting. We're strict on safety and good cycling citizenship, so be prepared to ride responsibly. Anyone not following Oregon Cycling Manual and COWs group cycling rules will be asked to leave the ride.
