Discovery Park - China Hat

This week’s ride is a 35 mile route that starts at Discovery Park, rides through through the west side of Bend, and out Knott Road to China Hat Road. Traffic can be busy on Knott Road, but the distance is short.

China Hat is probably one of the prettiest rides in the area and includes great views of several parasitic volcanic cones associated with Newberry Crater, one of the largest calderas in the US. The Three Sisters, as well as other Cascade volcanoes, are also visible on the ride. Also of interest is Boyd Cave, part of the Arnold Ice Cave system, which can be found near where China Hat Road turns to gravel (our turnaround). This lava tube system is also associated with Newberry Crater. The ride is out and back, so we will follow the reverse route back to River Canyon Park.
